Study Overview

Objectives

The overall objective of this program is to contribute broadly to the understanding of the health and health disparities among people of Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander heritage with a particular focus on cardiac, metabolic, pulmonary and mental health. The specific objectives of the initial phase are to:

  1. Establish an epidemiologic cohort of at least 11,500 consenting individuals, ages at least 18 years old, living in the United States (US), who are of East, South or Southeast Asian ancestry or of Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander (Samoan, Marshallese, Chuukese, Chamoru, etc.) ancestries.
  2. Characterize study participants with respect to factors that are known or potentially related to their cardiometabolic, pulmonary or mental health by estimating the prevalence, mean values, and distribution of key health and risk factors, with sufficient sample size to stratify by country of origin, larger geographic region, or indigenous ancestry (NHPI) or other relevant demographic characteristics.
  3. Evaluate associations among baseline risk factors, and relationships of risk factors with health outcomes.
  4. Serve as a platform for future ancillary studies, using the stored biospecimens and data to address new study questions beyond those proposed in the core study protocol.
